This spring, geologists in Biržai and Pasvalys districts of the country identified seven new karst phenomena.

According to the data of the Service, the highest risk this season was recorded in the water point of the Juostaviets settlement in Biržai district. A sinkhole here had expanded to a diameter of 5 m by 19 March this year.

Three new small sinkholes were also recorded in the villages of Drąseikiai and Mantagailiškis in the Biržai district.

Four new karst phenomena were detected in the Pasvalys district. In the villages of Puškoniai and Buiviškės, 3–3.5 m in diameter and up to 1.6 m deep smegholes were found. In the village of Moliūnai, an active and still expanding sinkhole was found, which is already 8–9 m in diameter and 1.4 m deep.

Another sinkhole, which is 1.1 m in diameter and 0.8 m deep, opened up in early May in a cultivated field in the village of Žadeikėliai.

Monitoring of karst phenomena is carried out twice a year, in spring and autumn, according to annual monitoring plans in the most calcified areas of Biržai district. In response to emerging phenomena, additional inventories are carried out in other municipalities, mainly in Pasvalys District.
