Double standards in the VMVT: some are stopped immediately, others tolerate multiple infringements more leniently

In early September, the State Food and Veterinary Service (SFVT) announced a temporary suspension of the supply of hens' eggs to the market of UAB „Vievio paukščiai“. The decision was taken after traces of salmonella were detected in part of the company's products. The VMVT indicated that this step is necessary for safety reasons, pending an extended investigation.

What does the company say?

In a press release, the VMVT clarified that the bacterium was detected not only in the company's hen eggs, but also in poultry houses. This has led to an inspection of the entire supply chain, production processes and product traceability.

In response to the situation, the „Groward Group“, which runs the company, immediately informed consumers and trading partners of the temporary suspension of egg supply. According to Algirdas Valancius, Managing Director, the company is working closely with the HSE, applying additional self-control measures and implementing a Salmonella prevention programme.

„Consumer safety is a top priority for us“, – he said.

However, „Groward Group“ did not deign to answer further questions to shed light on the situation. A spokesperson for the communications agency informed „Agrobite.lt“.

What does the HIA say?

In the meantime, the additional answers provided by the VMVT revealed several important aspects. The agency's press service pointed out that no factors affecting food safety had been recorded in UAB „Vievio paukščiai“ earlier this year. This is therefore the first infringement in the company in 2025.

The FVO has clarified that the supply of the company's products has been suspended for safety reasons, pending a further safety assessment. How long is this suspension likely to last?

„The activities of the entity will be suspended while the irregularities that may affect the safety of the product produced are eliminated and the causes are assessed and identified“, – the MoHV evaded a specific answer.

The Authority also has no data on whether consumers have returned potentially contaminated eggs to outlets.

Lack of consistency?

When looking at this situation from a consumer's point of view, the question arises – why is it that the most severe sanction is applied to a first-time offender – a complete suspension of supply, while other producers are subject to apparently relaxed standards?

According to the RASFF system of notifications of unsafe food and feed, in 2025 alone, UAB „Biovela-Utenos mėsa“ has recorded at least six food safety violations. Despite this, the supply of the company's products to the market has never been suspended. Why was the supply to UAB "Vievio paukščiai" suspended after the first infringement?

„The bacterium was detected not only in the eggs of the hens but also in the poultry houses of the producer. An extended investigation is being carried out, including live bird houses and feed production," the MoHVT again failed to provide a specific answer.
