If the government and the Seimas agree to the Ministry of Finance's proposal to tax sweetened beverages, the sugar tax could raise around €25 million for the budget.

The ministry's proposed tax changes, according to BNS data, include two sugar tax rates of €7.4 and €21 per 100 litres of beverages.

The rate of €7.4 would be applied when the sugar keikis per 100 millilitres does not exceed 8 grams, and €21 when it exceeds it. The same rate would apply to energy drinks.

The ministry points out that the new tax would increase the price of 1 litre of drink by between 9 and 25 cents.
