On 30 September, the State Food and Veterinary Service (SVVT) immediately launched an investigation after receiving a report from the Tauragė Department of the National Public Health Centre under the Ministry of Health that four people had contracted salmonellosis after consuming the same meat products. Seventeen people have been referred to the health facility today, twelve of whom have been confirmed with salmonellosis.

After questioning the ill persons, it was found that they had all consumed the same cold-smoked pork ham „Kauno kumpeliai” and cold-smoked pork loin „Cold-smoked pork tenderloin” produced by the UAB „Jurbarkų mėsa“. The products were purchased at the company's branded shop in Jurbarkas r. sav., Jurbarkų k, Daržų g. 8. The VMVT immediately carried out inspections at the production site and at the shop and took samples of the products for laboratory analysis. The results confirmed the detection of Salmonella bacteria in several of the samples of cold-smoked „Kauno kumpeliai” meat product.

A decision has been taken to prohibit the placing on the market of more than 180 kg of foodstuffs found in the production plant in connection with the outbreak investigation. The operator is also ordered to withdraw the banned products from the market and recall them from consumers.

The HVO warns the producer UAB „Jurbarkų mėsa“ not to consume cold-smoked meat products at this time and to return to the points of sale: cold-smoked pork ham „Kauno kumpeliai” and cold-smoked pork loin „Cold-smoked pork tenderloin”.

An unsafe product may be returned to the place of purchase with the receipt and the consumer is entitled to a refund of the money paid for the unsafe product.
