The Prime Minister misses the Food Council's proactivity

With the Food Council still unable to find a solution on how to reduce food prices, Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė says the Council should meet more often and work more actively.

„So if the professionals can't come up with a solution, they should sit down... Apparently, maybe they meet too rarely. So let them meet more often and find a solution“, – the prime minister told reporters on Friday at the Seimas when asked what proposals she had to reduce food prices.

„All the more so because there is a mandate from me to them – to review the food reserve, to review the possibility of having short chains to support our farmers and our businesses. They certainly have a lot of work to do, so I invite them to meet more often and work harder," the Prime Minister added.

The City Council meets quarterly, with the next meeting scheduled for Friday.

An overview of the food market, raw material import and export volumes and controls, and an analysis of Polish and Lithuanian farms will be presented at the meeting, the Agriculture Ministry told BNS.

As BNS reported, the Food Council has 27 members, including representatives of ministries, the government, farmers, processors, traders and universities, as well as the head of the State Office for Consumer Rights Protection.

The government has announced that the council will be dedicated to monitoring changes in food prices and making proposals to reduce them.

The Government has committed to the creation of such a council in its programme.
