Aurimas Šiburkis, leader of the „Poilsis“ subgroup of the Hunting Club, will have something to remember: he hunted two wolves in one hunt. Although hunting a wolf is already a great achievement, a double haul in this area is considered a real sensation. The wolves were hunted in the territory of the hunting club „Poilsis“ in the village of Sujetai, Panevėžys district, about 6 kilometres from Smilgiai.

After a long break

Hunter A. Šiburkis hunted two wolves just 10 minutes apart. This is a truly extraordinary event because, as Aurimas himself says, he hunted a wolf 32 years ago. Then, in all that time, the wolf's silhouette was only briefly glimpsed two years ago.

„I had a very big adrenaline rush. It was very cold while I was waiting, but after the first shot it got hot. There were a lot of emotions that night. Of course, I had a sleepless night, thinking about what had happened all the time," said Šiburkis.

Both hunted wolves were about two years old and weighed about 20–25 kilograms.

Scared roe deer and a long wait

As usual, during the hunt, hunters lurked in the towers hoping for wild boar, deer or elk, but on the last occasion, the field, which is usually full of roe deer, was empty at the time – this was already suspicious. „Since the beasts sense wolves, they just didn't show up“, – the hunter pointed out.

Later, several frightened and worried roe deer were seen in the fields. A short time later, some 200 metres away, an animal appeared. At first it was not clear what it was, but I fired a shot through my scope and found that it was definitely a wolf. 10 minutes later, a second wolf came from the other side, which was also successfully hunted," said Aurimas.

The smartest forest dweller

A. Šiburkis emphasised the uniqueness of the wolf as a hunted animal.

„The wolf is a secretive, mysterious and very cunning animal – perhaps even the most cunning forest dweller. Their packs hunt strategically, helping each other, while other beasts do not. For example, the lynx hunts alone, the fox hunts alone, and the wolves work as a team – it's nature's way of doing things and it's very fascinating, – explained the hunter.

Exclusive trophies

According to the procedure, after hunting a wolf, the hunter must fill in a hunting sheet and report to the Nature Conservancy for registration, while the trophy itself is left to the hunter.

A. Šiburkis's success in hunting two wolves in one hunt will take a tangible form. As the wolf is one of the most trophy animals, both catches will receive an exclusive treatment to commemorate this rare event.

„The wolf is a secretive, mysterious and very cunning animal – perhaps even the most cunning inhabitant of the forest“

The wolf's skull is considered to be the most important trophy to prove a successful hunt. It will be cleaned and prepared for display. An additional trophy – a stuffed head will be mounted on a special plaque. This stuffed head will allow a more detailed view of the predator's features while it is being hung.

Another wolf will be transformed into a full-body, full-head fur-coat. This is a particularly impressive and decorative type of trophy, perfectly representing a large catch.
