On Friday, a road traffic accident was reported in the Kėdainiai district, caused by a completely drunk driver who had got behind the wheel of a tractor in broad daylight. His journey was brought to a halt by… a tree. Meanwhile, the following day, officers caught another drink-driver – this time in Vilainiai.

According to the Kaunas County Chief Police Commissariat, on 12 June, at around 2.10 pm, in the village of Jaugiliai, a tractor driven by a 30-year-old man under the influence of alcohol veered off the road and crashed into a tree. A local resident who was passing by reported the accident to the Emergency Services Centre, and police officers soon rushed to the scene.

A breathalyser test revealed that the driver was heavily intoxicated – his blood alcohol level was measured at 2.74 per mille. Although the accident could have had far more serious consequences, the tractor driver himself was not seriously injured and did not require medical attention.

The man faces charges not only for driving whilst heavily intoxicated, but also for causing the road traffic accident.

Drink-drivers were also caught in the Kėdainiai district over the weekend. On Saturday evening in Vilainiai, police officers stopped a “Seat” car for a check. It soon became clear that the 35-year-old man behind the wheel was also heavily intoxicated – he blew 2.14 per mille on the breathalyser. This corresponds to a moderate level of intoxication.

Officers remind the public that drink-driving remains one of the greatest threats to road safety, and that such offences are punishable not only by fines but also by criminal liability.
