U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday announced a $12 billion aid package for United States farmers, a key constituency of his, who have suffered the consequences of his international trade and tariff policies.

Republican said during a roundtable discussion with agricultural producers at the White House that he is taking "very important steps to protect and defend American farmers".

D. Trump has faced mounting pressure to support farmers whose support helped him win a second term but who have suffered from the impact of his drastic tariffs.

Since Trump's return to the White House in January, many US farmers have been hit by a range of factors, including retaliation by the United States' trading partners and tariffs on imported agricultural goods.

„We love our farmers, and as you know, farmers like me“, – Trump said during the roundtable discussion.

The $12 billion in support for farmers, he said, will be funded by a „relatively small portion“ of tariff revenue.

The bulk of the support will come from one-off payments to crop farmers.
