Thousands of farmers protest in Brussels, police use water cannons (VIDEO)

Thousands of farmers staged a protest against the free trade agreement between the EU and the South American bloc "Mercosur" in the European Quarter of Brussels on Thursday, causing chaos. Police used water cannons against demonstrators who tried to break through barriers, police confirmed to the „dpa“ agency. According to the organisers of the protest, there were about 10,000 protesters, while police said there were about 7,300 people and hundreds of tractors.

Water cannons were used in the European Quarter, local police said. Some farmers reportedly tried to break through barriers erected by security forces. In addition, arson, pyrotechnics and tear gas were used. Demonstrators also attacked the European Parliament with potatoes and fireworks.

An EU summit is taking place in Brussels on Thursday, including on the planned free trade agreement between the EU and „Mercosur“. Farmers reject the agreement because they fear disproportionate competition from cheap imports. Farmers are also worried that they may receive less money from the EU budget in the future.

On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with farmers' representatives. She said: "In times of uncertainty, our farmers need reassurance and support". Europe will always be on their side.

A new free trade area between the EU and the 700 million plus countries of the Mercosur bloc would be the largest in the world, according to the European Commission. The Commission finalised the agreement last December despite criticism from countries such as France. It is scheduled to be signed next Saturday in Brazil – however, it requires the approval of a certain majority of EU countries. A decision is expected at the EU summit. It is not clear whether the necessary majority will be obtained.
