One thousandth site marked on the waste contamination map is cleaned up
Just before St. On 23 December, the 1000th waste-contaminated area was cleaned up, marked on the interactive map created by the Department of Environmental Protection tvarkaulietuva.lt.
Since the launch of the interactive map in September 2023, residents have reported 1,754 violations in the countryside, with the 1,000th cleaned-up case marked in the municipality of Pagėgiai, in the village of Opstainiai. Discarded slate waste was found in Vilkyškių Forest. Environmental inspectors inspected the area and found that the waste had been dumped a long time ago, so they were unable to find the polluter. If the person who disposed of the waste is not found, the obligation to clean up the site lies with the owner of the site, in this case the State Forest Enterprise. The employees of the Rambynas Forestry of the Šilutė Regional Unit kindly cleaned up the waste from the slate.
The interactive map is used to mark the waste. There is a wide range of waste left on roadsides, in forests and other areas, but the most common are tyres and construction waste. A leaflet produced by the Department of Environmental Protection provides information on how to properly manage construction waste and car tyres.
On the map, you can track the progress of the management of sites that have already been flagged, according to the status of the report: received, under investigation, resolved, not confirmed, and see what the site looks like after it has been cleaned. When environmental officers receive a report, they know the exact coordinates and go to the flagged site to start the investigation: the offender is identified and ordered to clean up the waste. If no offender is found, the owner of the site is obliged to clean up the waste.
Tvarkaulietuva.lt – a convenient way to report contaminated sites in the country
In September 2023, the Department of Environmental Protection developed an interactive map. The map makes it quicker and more accurate to report litter sightings in the countryside, and invites citizens to contribute to reducing the number of contaminated sites in the country by identifying and cleaning them up as soon as possible. The interactive map tvarkaulietuva.lt asks residents to provide as much detailed information as possible: add photos, mark coordinates, describe the situation in as much detail as possible, and thus contribute to the protection of the environment.
