Are farmers attractive employers?

How to work less and earn more, or finding a worker.

Are farmers attractive employers? Yes, I think so, but working for farmers is seasonal. In spring and summer more people are employed, especially on crop farms, so some workers return to the Employment Service in the autumn," said Rita Averinienė, a consultant with the Employment Service's services for employers.
Offers around one thousand euros „in hand“

A look at the Employment Service's website shows that in the Biržai region, even with spring in full swing, there are only a few job ads for farm workers. At the moment, unskilled stable workers, farm operators and tractor drivers are needed. We asked if farmers are finding it difficult to find people who want to work on the farm?

Milda Jankauskaitė, a farmer in Šukionys, is looking for a tractor operator & a farm hand to take on a permanent position. The pay is around €1,000 „per hand“. We asked how the search for a worker is going – have you managed to find a serious candidate yet?

„This is the first time I've advertised, so it hasn't been long. However, in the area where my farm is located, the labour shortage is very acute. It is very difficult to find reliable and responsible people, and I don't even know if I will succeed. There are hardly any young people around who are willing and able to work either," said Jankauskaitė.

The farm she manages is medium-sized and is a crop farmer. She said she is only in her second season of independent farming. Although she is able to do most of the work herself, she eventually realised that she needed to have some reinforcement. Therefore, she hopes to find a reliable worker.

„Jobseekers from as far away as Joniškis have called. This was a bit of a surprise, as I did not expect such interest. However, we agreed to meet – maybe we can make a deal. At first I didn't think about looking for workers in other districts, but if we managed to reach an agreement, there would be a possibility of accommodation," said M. Jankauskaitė.
