Head of the Business Gardens Association: frosts hamper garden development

Increasing frosts are hampering the development of business gardens, says Vitalija Kuliešienė, the head of the Business Gardens Association „Vaisiai ir uogos“. This year, she said, a large number of gardens have froze over – only about 10% of them will produce a harvest.

„We have been experiencing frosts for several years now, since 2019 we have been experiencing unpredictable frosts and no one is expanding their orchards, which is why apples are becoming more expensive (...). Our apples and our fruit are really in short supply. We could expand our orchards and grow them quite profitably," Kuliešienė told LRT radio on Monday.

All the gardens have froze this year, she said, and only 10% of them are expected to produce a harvest: "All the business gardens are damaged, frosted, and also touched by amateurs."

„If 10% of the whole of Lithuania has... These will be the results. In the autumn, we will see (in the shops – BNS) a really very small amount of (Lithuanian – BNS) apples. If at all. The (BNS) frost has been extraordinary," she said.

Cherries and cherries, which are scarce in Lithuania, froze completely, she said.
