In May, seasonal trends dominated the fresh vegetable market: the prices of cucumbers and tomatoes fell by a quarter
In May 2026, seasonality had an increasingly significant impact on the Lithuanian fresh vegetable market. As the supply of local produce increased, average purchase prices for most vegetables fell, although price rises were also recorded in some segments. May proved to be a favourable month for field mushroom growers, whilst positive price trends also prevailed in the potato and carrot markets.
Prices for greenhouse vegetables fell the fastest
The sharpest fall in prices in May was recorded in the greenhouse vegetable segment. The average purchase price of cucumbers fell from 2.24 Eur/kg in April to 1.66 Eur/kg in May. This represents a decrease of as much as 25.9 per cent.
The situation was similar in the tomato market. Their average purchase price fell over the month from 4.49 Eur/kg to 3.33 Eur/kg, or by 25.8 per cent.
These changes were driven by the peak of the growing season and the growing supply of Lithuanian greenhouse produce, which increased competition in the market and put pressure on prices.
Onions and lettuce also became cheaper
Prices for some other fresh vegetables also fell in May. The average purchase price for onions stood at 0.20 Eur/kg, 25.9 per cent lower than in April.
Lettuce prices fell by 21.4 per cent – from 4.76 Eur/kg to 3.74 Eur/kg. This is also linked to the growing supply of local produce and the season gaining momentum.
A more favourable situation for potato and carrot growers
In contrast to many other vegetable segments, the potato market saw price increases in May. The average purchase price for potatoes reached 0.25 Eur/kg, which was 19 per cent higher than in April.
However, compared with the same period a year ago, the price of potatoes remained almost a third lower.
Positive trends were also seen in the carrot market. Their average purchase price in May stood at 0.46 Eur/kg, 2.2 per cent higher than the previous month. Compared with May 2025, carrots were as much as 35.3 per cent more expensive.
Prices for field mushrooms continued to rise
May was also a more favourable month for field mushroom growers. The average purchase price of white field mushrooms rose by 3.5 per cent to €2.95/kg.
Even faster growth was recorded in the brown field mushroom segment – their price rose by 7.6 per cent to €3.96/kg. Compared with May last year, brown field mushrooms were 10.6 per cent more expensive.
Stability in the cabbage market
The average purchase price of white cabbage remained unchanged in May, standing at 0.31 Eur/kg. However, compared with May 2025, it was as much as 58 per cent lower.
The price of red cabbage fell by 5.9 per cent over the month to 0.64 Eur/kg.
Lithuanian strawberries have returned to the market
With the Lithuanian strawberry season beginning in May, the first batch of the new harvest appeared on the market. The average purchase price for strawberries was 8.85 Eur/kg.
Compared with April, strawberries were 12.2 per cent cheaper, whilst compared with May 2025, prices were 4.4 per cent lower.
The supply of local produce will continue to shape the market
Data for May shows that the growing supply of Lithuanian vegetables had a significant impact on price changes. The most pronounced price decrease was recorded in the greenhouse vegetable segment, whilst prices for some stored vegetables and field mushrooms remained stable or rose.
With the summer season approaching and volumes of local produce increasing, it is likely that the influence of seasonal factors on the market will continue to grow. This may lead to further price changes in both the vegetable and berry segments.
