When to plant carrots, cabbages and beetroots this spring for a bumper harvest?
Carrots, cabbage, beetroot – the main crops in the garden. Choosing the right time to sow them has a direct impact on the growth and yield of these vegetables . When to plant them?
When to plant carrots?
Late April is the ideal time to sow carrots in open ground. By this point, the ground will have warmed up to 8-10°C, which is essential for uniform seed germination.
Carrots should be sown in well-lit beds with loose and light soil. If planting is delayed until mid-May, the carrots may develop less well due to high temperatures and rapid drying of the soil.
It is a good idea to soak the seeds in warm water before sowing to speed up germination. The depth of seed placement should be no more than 1-1,5 cm to allow the seedlings to emerge quickly. The first seedlings usually appear within 7-14 days, depending on weather conditions.
When to plant cabbage?
Cabbage seedlings are planted in the open ground at the end of April or early May. By this time, the sprouts should have 4-5 true leaves and be hardened off in the field.
Planting is best done on a cloudy day or in the evening to help the young plants to adapt. For early cabbage varieties, this is the optimum time, as the plants will develop better with the gradual warming of the air.
Late varieties can also be planted at this time to harvest in late summer or autumn. It is important to prepare the soil properly: it must be fertile, moist and well-drained.
After planting, cabbages should be watered regularly, especially in the first few weeks.
Planting beetroot
Broccoli is best sown at the end of April or in the first few days of May, when the soil is well warmed up. At a ground temperature of around 10°C, the seeds germinate quickly and the seedlings become strong and uniform.
If beetroot is sown earlier, in cold ground, the plants may produce flower stalks.
It is advisable to soak the seeds in warm water for a few hours before sowing to speed up germination. Sow the beetroot in a well-lit area, in light, nutritious soil without standing water.
Optimum sowing depth – about 2–3 cm, row spacing – 20-25 cm. When seedlings appear, they should be thinned out to ensure large and even roots.
