Four reports of wolf-killed animals in Rokiškis District in August
After the weekend, Rokiškis District Municipality received a report from Regimantas Milaševičius, a farmer from Neršioniai village, Juodupė municipality, that 16 of his sheep had been cut by wolves over two nights.
According to Irina Barauskienė, chairwoman of the municipality's Commission for the assessment of damage caused by game to agricultural crops, farm animals and forests, the damage suggests that wolves are currently training their cubs to hunt. In autumn, there are always more reports of damage caused by wolves to farm animals, as this is the time when pups are trained to hunt. This month – this is the fourth report and the highest number of animals killed. This month wolves killed a calf in the Obeliai municipality, 6 sheep a couple of times in the Kaimiškės municipality, and now 16 sheep," says I. Barauskienė.
According to the specialist, last year there were only 4 cases of wolves killing farm animals in Rokiškis district, while this year there were so many cases – in one month only.
I.Barauskienė says that after assessing the losses, the commission will send the report to the Ministry of Environmental Protection for compensation to the farmer. "The losses are still being calculated, we do not have all the data yet," commented the chairwoman of the commission.
