The arbitrary behaviour of grain buyers is coming to an end (VIDEO)

The Lithuanian Grain Growers' Association (LGAA) has conducted a survey among farmers on the current procedure of grain purchase conditions and how they assess the new procedure, when the amended Minister of Agriculture's order "On the approval of the description of the procedure of sampling of grain and (or) oilseed from vehicles and (or) sampling piles" will come into effect on 20 January 2025.

It provides for significant changes which, if applied as foreseen in the Ordinance, will finally put farmers in a better situation and limit the possibilities for grain buyers to manipulate samples.

Since the survey showed that as many as 82.5% of farmers said they had complaints and unpleasant experiences of unfair practices by grain buyers. In addition, 97.9% of respondents support the new Ministerial Order, which will come into force and adds that the laboratory sampling procedure may also be observed by the cereal seller or his representative.

The new order provides for a longer period of storage of samples left in the laboratory, i.e. 48 hours instead of the current 24 hours. In addition, in the event of a dispute, the samples must be sent to the laboratory for arbitration within 72 hours at the latest.

We talk to Dainius Arlauskas, a member of the boards of the LGAA and the Anykščiai District Farmers' Union, about this experience and the potential losses for a farmer who delivers grain and is downgraded.
