Tourists and residents on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula prepare for a hurricane Beryl. According to the Mexican authorities, more than 380,000 holidaymakers are still currently staying in popular resorts in the region, such as Cancun and Tulum.

Vietnamese media reported that people are stockpiling water and food and covering windows with wooden planks. Emergency shelters have been prepared and thousands of soldiers and policemen deployed. Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday in some places and ports will be closed, even for cruise ships.

According to the US National Hurricane Center, Beryl, which passed through Jamaica on Wednesday as a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to make landfall on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday evening after weakening slightly.

According to the Mexican Meteorological Service, Beryl will make landfall in two different locations within a few days. The storm will reach the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday evening or early Friday as a Category 2 hurricane, with wind speeds of up to 155 kilometres per hour between Tulum and the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

Beryl is forecast to move across the peninsula towards the Gulf of Mexico later on. It will make landfall again as a tropical storm between the eastern states of Tamaulipas and Veracruz as of Monday evening, but it is possible that Beryl will still be a Category 1 hurricane at that time.
