U.S. tariffs hit French wine and spirits exports hard last year, contributing in large part to an overall eight per cent drop in the value of one of France's most important exports, the trade organisation said on Tuesday. Exports to the US, meanwhile, fell by 21 per cent, the French Federation of Wine and Spirit Exporters (FEVS) said.

The US is the largest importer of French wines and spirits – it accounted for 21% of the total export market last year. "Geopolitical tensions, commercial conflicts, exchange rate fluctuations and a drop in household confidence have had a negative impact on our exports," said Gabriel Picard, President of the FEVS.

French and European wines have also been hit by the increased tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on European alcoholic beverages in 2025, initially at 10 per cent, then 15 per cent.

„Tariffs imposed in the United States and an unfavourable exchange rate had a significant impact on the overall result,– FEVS said in a statement.

Economic uncertainty affecting consumer spending as well as wholesalers' stockpiling also contributed to the decline, it said.

Overall, the value of France's exports of wines and spirits fell by 7.9 percent to 14.3 billion euros (17.0 billion US dollars).

Exports fell by 3.3% in volume terms. The French wine and spirits sector accounts for 600,000 jobs and generates annual revenues of around €32 billion.
