Egg prices in neighbouring Poland forecast to rise in autumn
The population of laying hens in Poland has declined significantly, leading poultry farmers in the country to predict a rise in the price of eggs in the autumn.
„The number of hatched chickens will not be able to meet the needs of commercial farms, so egg prices are inevitable in autumn. We are experiencing a kind of déjà vu as we monitor the market. We saw a similar situation in 2022," says Katarzyna Gawrońska, Director of the Polish National Chamber of Poultrymeat and Feed Producers.
Wholesale egg prices have already started to increase slowly, as has been observed. However, egg prices are not expected to rise as much this year as in 2022, but consumers will feel the price increase.
Depending on the year, between 21 and 25 million young hens are produced in Poland each year. This season, however, there are just over 19 million.
Farms are investing less because of the gradual shift from cage to free range production and other animal welfare requirements.
