Japan has lifted restrictions on Lithuanian poultry meat and egg products
On 25 June, Japan officially lifted the temporary restrictions on exports of poultry meat and poultry products that had previously been imposed on the Klaipėda, Telšiai and Marijampolė regions. This is excellent news for the Lithuanian agricultural sector, as these regions are the main suppliers of turkey meat and egg products to the Japanese market.
It is important to emphasise that these restrictions were lifted for Lithuania before they were for neighbouring Poland, even though the bans had been imposed on Poland even earlier. This demonstrates the highly effective and prompt work of the Lithuanian authorities, as well as their reliable cooperation with the Japanese side.
Japanese business representatives, who value the reliable cooperation with our country’s producers, have already expressed a strong desire to resume trade without delay.
The aim is to ensure the smooth flow of exports in the future
Andrius Palionis, Acting Minister of Agriculture, emphasises that the most important thing is to create the conditions for trade to proceed without disruption.
“We have agreed with the Japanese Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries that we must ensure safe and uninterrupted exports as soon as possible. We are currently actively coordinating the certification of heat-treated products. This is a crucial step – with such certificates in place, trade would not be disrupted even in the event of future outbreaks of avian influenza“, said A. Palionis.
To consolidate this progress, a high-level delegation from Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is expected to visit Lithuania in October this year.
Focus on the quality of Lithuanian produce
With a view to further strengthening ties with Japan and increasing export volumes, a journalist from the influential Japanese publication “Food Journal” will be visiting Lithuania next week. The aim of this visit is to showcase the potential of Lithuanian food producers and their high production standards to the Japanese market.
