Gardeners fear loss of fruit and vegetable crops due to this year's frost

Lithuania's prolonged night frosts have berry and vegetable growers fearing that this could affect this year's entire crop, both fruit and berries and early vegetables.

„Cherry blossoms are starting to bloom in some places, plums, peaches are now flowering, so it could really bite (frost – ELTA) everything too. That one night could be fatal and we could lose the whole harvest in one night," Tautvydas Gurskas, chairman of the Berry Growers Association, told LRT radio on Thursday.

„It's a serious sleepless night for all gardeners“, – he added.

„Early vegetables are under stress (...). Early potatoes are already planted and emerging, early beetroots are emerging and cabbage seedlings are being planted. If the frost is light, everything is fine, but as the weather forecasters say it will be up to 10 degrees, I think a lot of vegetables won't be able to withstand it," said Mr Laukaitis.

Synoptics are predicting that the weather will turn colder at the weekend. Rain is forecast in some places, but there may be a chance of drizzle and frosts of up to 6 degrees Celsius.

Saturday will warm up to 14 degrees and Sunday will reach only 9 degrees.Cold nights are expected until the end of April.
