Gloomy outlook for Europe: declining food security poses major challenges
Steffen Greubel, CEO of the German retailer „Metro AG“, has made a shocking announcement to Europeans – Europe could run out of food.
„We will face a situation where we will have to ensure security of supply“," Greubel said at the annual press conference. He is quoted byinFranken.de.
„Metro AG“ operates in nearly 30 countries and the group's net sales for the 2023/2024 financial year amounted to more than 31 billion euros.
„However, in the long term“ Germany will face the problem of difficulty in filling store shelves with food. Already, shoppers in the „Metro“ are struggling to get some products.
According to nFranken.de, climate change, political decisions and over-regulation are the main factors influencing the possible collapse of the food supply chain. These are the factors that are influencing the decline in food production in Germany.
Decreased supply of pork has forced „Metro“ to import pork from Spain.
„Here in Europe, the availability of food will in the long term be more of a challenge than its price. In order to ensure that markets are supplied, it is essential to turn to local producers," stressed Mr Greubel‘is.
The German Fruit and Vegetable Trade Association is already concerned about the shortage of supply of fresh fruit and vegetables in Germany. In the case of vegetables, local production only covers about 40% of demand, while fruit only covers 20%.
