The Polish Parliament has adopted a resolution calling on the European Commission (EC) to block imports of agricultural products from Russia and Belarus, Polish Radio reported on Friday.

The document stresses that imports of food and agricultural products from Russia and its close ally Belarus, which have been fighting a large-scale war in Ukraine for more than two years, continue to make huge profits for producers, traders and the budgets of the countries concerned.

„We have a moral obligation to stop trade that may directly or indirectly contribute to Russia and Belarus' ability to continue the war in Ukraine, especially as Russian imports may include grain stolen from the occupied territories of Ukraine, the resolution said.

The Polish and Lithuanian prime ministers also said on Monday that the European Union should take joint decisions on the ban on Russian and Belarusian grain imports.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who was in Vilnius, stressed that a joint EU decision would be more effective than a decision by individual countries.

Poland has recently complained that a surplus of cheap Ukrainian grain and other products is causing losses for Polish farmers, but the problem is also caused by grain imports from Russia, Tusk said.
