In Cumbria, UK, a farmer sprayed slurry on around 20 cars that had been illegally abandoned by tourists on his lawn. The incident sparked a huge social media backlash and prompted a police investigation.

Farmer Hogg Hodgson said he had repeatedly warned motorists not to park on private land. He said that he had put up signs and stones at the entrance, but that some visitors were attracted by the barriers and still parked their cars on the meadow.

According to local media, the nearby official car parks fill up quickly on weekends, and some tourists seek out unauthorised places to leave their cars. Among the vehicles sprayed with slurry were luxury cars.

Although the farmer's action has attracted some public support, legal experts remind us that unauthorised acts against someone else's property can lead to liability for the landowner himself. Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident.

The Lake District is one of the UK's most visited national parks, attracting millions of visitors each year. Local communities and farmers have been complaining for years about illegal parking, trampled meadows and the increasing number of tourists.
