Farmers' protest: the Poles don't let in trucks from Ukraine

On Saturday morning, Polish farmers launched a long-lasting protest at the Medyka & Shehynia border checkpoint with Ukraine, stopping trucks from that country from entering the country.

Farmers are demanding changes in agricultural policy, the fulfilment of government promises, and opposition to the signing of the European Union's agreement with MERCOSUR countries.

The protesters are behaving in exactly the same way as they did at the beginning of this year. They only let buses, military and humanitarian convoys and one truck per hour through.

The organisers of the blockade claim that the trucks are transporting food and agricultural products into Poland in violation of previous agreements between the EU and Ukraine.

Polish farmers launched a similar protest on 9 February this year.

The blockade of border checkpoints was only lifted on 29 April.

Farmers are also angry with the municipality's manager, who has twice refused to grant permission for farmers to build a temporary container-house on municipal land. The farmers solved this problem by obtaining permission from the owner of the private land.

Polish farmers plan to continue the border blockade until 31 December.
