Russian grain transit through Latvia almost tripled last year
In 2025, 673,500 cereals and cereal products from Russia were transited through Latvia - 2.9 times less than in 2024, according to data published by the State Revenue Service.
The bulk of this was wheat and triticale (665.7 thousand tonnes).
Latvia did not import any grains and their products from Russia last year, except for 15.2 thousand tonnes of imported rapeseed.
Latvia's Parliament (Saeima) adopted amendments to the Law on Agriculture and Rural Development in February last year, which temporarily banned the import of Russian and Belarusian agricultural products and feed, including via third countries.
In addition, customs duties on imports of cereals from Russia and Belarus have come into force in the European Union from mid-2024, whereas until then they were largely duty-free.
