Lithuanian production will not take off into space
The products of the Panevėžys-based company „Geld Baltic“, which has received funding from the European Space Agency (ESA) for the development of innovative snacks for space missions and for the testing of cold spices, vegetables, berries and fruits, will be launched into space in February 2026, writes the portal „LRT.
According to the company's CEO Laura Kaziukonienė, the final recipes for the Lithuanian snacks will have to be approved on 4 December this year, and the product will be launched into space in 2028 as a part of the ESA's project in the best-case scenario.
However, Kaziukonienė says that the innovative snack may be launched into Earth orbit earlier than that, perhaps with a commercial mission in February 2026.
„It will be sent, it will wake up in space (...). When we come back, we'll investigate what's going on there. In theory, everything should be fine, because the freeze-dried food has all been lifted, a lot of things have been tested, the technology is suitable, but we still need to check how the space environment will affect our cubes, which are still linked to other components, – she said.
The company is supplying its products – snacks and freeze-dried meals – to the Ukrainian front, and is starting to work with the Lithuanian army.
