Police officers and border guards found an elderly mushroom picker lost in the woods in Klaipėda district at night. According to the police of the port city, on Tuesday evening, at around 18:44, a report was received that an 80-year-old woman had left her home in Klaipėda district to go mushroom picking in the early hours of the morning of the same day, and that she had not yet returned.

Officials immediately launched an intensive search for the missing woman; three teams of officers from the Klaipėda City and District Police Commissariats, a cynologist with a service dog, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and a border guards' helicopter were searching the forest for the missing woman. The 80-year-old mushroom picker was spotted around midnight by its crew and found alive and well by the officers who arrived at the designated, rather inaccessible place.

Police officers say they are always ready to help in the search for lost people, but remind people to go into the forest with responsible preparation. It is advisable to inform your relatives clearly and as accurately as possible where and for how long you plan to go mushroom picking. A fully charged mobile phone should also be carried, and brightly coloured clothing is recommended.

When lost, it is advisable to be as open as possible and to have a whistle to announce your location, as well as a torch or matches.
Helicopters searching for people are equipped with cameras to detect heat-emitting objects and pilots use night vision goggles when flying at night, so the smallest source of light can make the search much easier.
