Why don't you grow soya !!! (VIDEO)

Soybean farming is not making a breakthrough in our country, even though, according to Saulius Daniulis, Vice-Chairman of the Lithuanian Organic Farms Association (LEŪA), field days have been organised for a number of years.

„Agrobite play“ channel visited one of these field days, where specialists, as well as farmers themselves, shared their experience in soya cultivation. It is a very promising crop, but will its enthusiasts be fully deterred by the European Union's planned trade agreement with MERCOSUR, the South American organisation that links South American countries?

Brazil alone accounts for 40% of the total soybean harvest (as much as 169 million tonnes in 2024/2025, according to MERCOSUR figures). Of this harvest, 53.2 million tonnes are exported (70% of the exports go to China).

MERCOSUR members Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay together produce a further 65 million tonnes, of which around 5 million tonnes are exported.

What this means when you consider that Lithuania produces only 7 000 tonnes probably goes without saying.

But it is clear that as the EU market opens up more (after the Mercosur agreement), EU farmers are likely to face unprecedented competition.

And despite all this, there is no shortage of soybean enthusiasts in Lithuania. What is special about this crop, which is almost ideal for crop rotation? And could we increase the number of hectares under soya beans from around 2 500 hectares to 180 000? See all this in „Agrobite play“.
